Buster “Buck” Copley
Dunnville, Kentucky
My dad pulled from 1967
until his death in August 2001, when he died in a logging accident. He had
been a logger his entire life and he loved doing that type of work. He
often used his horses to log with, something he loved to do. He pulled in
the lightweight class in Kentucky for years pulling in 2800, 2900, 3000, 3200
and 3300 pound classes. He pulled in many different states they included:
Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, Michigan,
Illinois, New York, Iowa, Alabama and Mississippi. He won the Kentucky
State Championship twice, 1984 and 1997. He won the “BIG” pull at
Taylorsville Kentucky three times; 1984, 1986, and 1987. He also won the
Mid-Winter pull at Columbus Ohio in 1990. There were 32 teams at this pull
and no one expected him to win. His favorite pull was “Jo Jo’s” pull at
Greenville Kentucky, although he never won the pull, he finished third on five
different occasions, the closest he ever came. He and his brother Ronald,
“Ronnie” pulled together for many years as the “COPLEY BROTHERS”. His son
Eddie now pulls mules because they are less expensive. His oldest son Gary
pulled with him some and owned a few of the horses that he pulled. His
daughter, Margaret, also owned a few horses that he pulled. My dad loved pulling
and would still be pulling today if he were still with us.
