Charlie Harley
from Marcellus, Michigan pulled ponies and then horses for 43 years before
retiring in 2002. After beginning his pulling career with ponies he
switched over to lightweight horses in 1978 and then in 1987 went with the
heavyweights till his retirement from active pulling. Charlie used to like
to tour the country pulling horses at various times at pulling events in IN, MI,
KY, OH, WI, MS, NY, ME, MA, NH, CO, IL, SC, IA, MN and even traveled into
Canada. Charlie was a logger all his life until his retirement but
continues to keep busy by working horses for the Herr family as well as judging
horsepulling events in Michigan. He told us that his favorite pull to
compete in was the Michigan Great Lakes International. Charlie considers his most important
accomplishment in pulling as beating Jack Buhler in Ionia after Jack had one it
two years in a row. He also is very proud of having come out on top of Francis
Root at his own county fair in Angelica, NY and having won the pull in Evart,
MI. Charlie says he had a wonderful time and met some awfully nice
people that mean the world to him while pulling and he still tries to help out when
he can. |
