2010 Inductee
Leonard Hughes Jr.
Nashville, Michigan

Lenny Hughes
-
The
Michigan Dynamometer Association is proud to induct Mr. Leonard Hughes Jr. of
Nashville, Michigan into the Michigan Draft Horse Pullers Hall of Fame.
Lenny's pulling career began in 1978. Leonard Hughes Sr.'s horse pulling
involvement undoubtedly had something to do with it!
Thirty-two years later, Lenny continues to support the pulling industry with
both lightweight and heavyweight teams. Along the road have been a dairy
farm and hog farming. Now it is beef cattle and Hughes Logging, buying,
cutting, skidding, hauling and selling timber.
Mr.
Hughes won the National Lightweight Championship at the Hillsdale County Fair in
1998. He won the State of Michigan Lightweight Championship in 2005 at the
Livingston County, Fowlerville Fair. Mr. Hughes hooked to the World Record
breaking load of 4,150 pounds in 1991 and also in 2004! His first place
wins and horsemanship awards number well over 100! Lenny served as a
Michigan Dynamometer Association Director from 1990 to 1999.
The
enthusiasm Lenny has for horse pulling is reflected in his family. Lenny
and Juliet's three daughters, Tracy, (Mrs. Billy Keegan), Heather, (Mrs. Mike
Newsome) and Hope Hughes continue the family tradition. The four
grandchildren are pulling enthusiasts as well.
Coffee served by Juliet around the table over the past 30 plus years should be
measured by the gallon, not the cup! Many a great meal has been enjoyed by
pullers and their families as well. The Hughes home at 100 North Price
Road certainly has an open door policy, whether it is a "stay over" between
pulls, getting help with your team, or just a great visit. It was for
these very reasons that Bobby Berry of Sulligent, Alabama nominated Len Hughes
for the Hall of Fame.
Lenny is proud of his horse pulling legacy and grateful for all the past
pullers, their sacrifices and dedication to keep horse pulling alive.
Thank you Lenny Hughes for your support of quality horse pulling and the desire
to help others.
Congratulations!
