Horses pull their weight and more

Todd Cole, Fredericktown, drives his horses, Doc, left, and Bud, as they successfully pull a 9,500-pound weight during Sunday’s draft horse pull at the Knox County Fair.

MOUNT VERNON — A pair of local teams competed in the final stages of Sunday’s draft horse pull competition. Both, however, lost in the end to a team from New Concord.

Mike Cole and his nephew, Todd, from Fredericktown, finished second in the competition after passing on a 10,000-pound pull. Bill Cole, from Mount Vernon, finished third when his team pulled a 9,500-pound weight 27 feet, 1 inch.

Mike Cole was not disappointed in the finish.

“Everybody did a nice job,” Mike said. “Especially the green (inexperienced) horse. He held on well.”

This is the first year of pulling for Mike’s 7-year-old horse, Doc. His elder horse, Bud, has been pulling for seven years.

“They get up for it,” said Mike. “They just won’t quit.”

Both admit the horses know that they’re competing, and get energized before every horse pull.
