Jerald Keegan and Ken Heightchew purchased Smuck as a nine year old at the 2003 Topeka Fall Sale.  The horse, classified as a tall thin colt was made a pet of by three Amish girls for the first few years of his life.  Several notable pullers looked at the horse but no purchase was made.
