MEYERSDALE - There were 12 teams that came out on Sunday for the horse
pulling competition at the Somerset County Fair.
In the winnerís spot for the heavyweight division, Brown Brothers of Acme
got first, followed by Paul Lepley of Meyersdale. Jeff Martin of
Punsxatawney received third place; Don Sproat of Dawson in fourth; Brock
Rice of Dawson in fifth; Ron Shaffer, Finzel, Md., in sixth; and Alvie May
of Meyersdale in seventh.
In the lightweight division, Perkey Farms of Mount Pleasant received
first place, followed by Tom Brown of Acme in second. Perkey Farms with
another entry won third place and Jake Shaffer of Meyersdale got fourth. Ray
Long of Sidman came in fifth, followed by Weldon Lepley of Meyersdale in
sixth and Dustin May of Mill Run in seventh.
This year, there were horsemanship awards handed out to Ray Long in the
lightweight division and Ronnie Shaffer in the heavyweight division. The
horsemanship awards were sponsored by Bill McIntyre of Indiana County and
handed out locally by Butch Lepley of Meyersdale.
Dr. Albert Barnett, president of Laurel Highlands Horse Pulling Association,
handed out trophies to the winners.
