I am hardly an authority, but will share any insight I have in the name of promoting the sport. First, each horse is different and will respond differently to training. But almost all I have ever worked with have benefited from a minimum of 3 miles a day on the work sled and 3 to 4 sessions a week on a load they can pull 50-60 feet without being out of wind (pushing the limit, but not exceeding). I like using hills to train on both the work sled and heavy sled, where if they put in a little extra effort up the hill, it will get easier after the crest. If you are just starting out, an experienced pair can teach you as much as anything will, even if they will no longer put you on top. Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions of me. As I said, I haven't won any of the big pulls listed on here, just a few here in Missouri, but will try and help anyone to the extent of my ability.
