As a girl growing up in the horse pulling world, I grew up with the sound of blocks rattling in the sled. I loved that sound then and I still do. If anyone had ever told me that there would be a machine pull association in Kentucky, I would have not believed them. But, it has happened. Attending the first pull last Saturday was a great experience. We have to be grateful to Terry and Glen Yoder for purchasing the Reed Machine and donating it to the association. And although they were there helping with the first pull, this is the responsibility of Chris Hatfield, President, and the association to ensure its success. Chris has put together a varied group of directors and they were all there working Saturday to make the first pull a success. Justin Mahoney, a director, had the lead with this first pull and raising the sponsor money and he ran with it. All the Mahoneys were there including the patriarch, Eugene, and it was great to see them pose for their photo after their heavy class win. Jerry Harp, driving the Jacobs and Harp pair made the very first hitch and Larry and Benny Reed were there supervising the machine for the first pull. Chris made it clear the first meeting that this association was not formed to take away existing pulls as many have speculated. But, was formed to add additional pulls or try to get back some that have been lost. Also, there is the point that we are not getting any younger. The machine allows pullers that are not able to drive on a sled to have the team brought into them and continue to participate. Everyone says that horse pulling is a dying sport. Well, it wasn't Saturday. It was a great first pull and yes even though I miss hearing the blocks rattle, the "Reed Machine" is a great machine to pull on. A special thanks to Terry and Glen Yoder for continuing to promote horse pulling, not just in Florida, but all over the country. I have a feeling that people have no idea how much support they provide to so many pulls. Also, thanks to Chris for his hard work in putting this all together. But, as was announced Saturday, associations are not just for the pullers. We need the support of fans near and far for this to succeed. If you would like to become a member please see our information page on this site. Thanks also to Bill Torrey for providing this forum. JoJo
