When I was young there were two main events in each year, the Indiana State Fair horsepull and Christmas. When Papa and I talked about the State Fair, we weren't talking about Kentucky, it was Indiana. We pulled in Indiana heavyweight contests all year and we looked forward to the State Fair and seeing all of our friends and the pullers that would come in from surrounding states. And, you got to hear the voice of horsepulling, Al Dillon. I don't think Al was in charge of the pull, but he made sure that the pullers were treated with respect. You could park in the grass, have stalls and stay a day or two. Remember pulling outside on the track and there was a mule pull too? I know the pull yesterday was a great pull with the top teams in the nation, but with the high entry fee and having to park on the blacktop and no stalls a lot of people just chose not to go. Look at the results, there have been great pulls in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and I am sure other states that had lots of teams in their class and didn't need teams pulling back to make a show. Congratulations to the winners, but shame on the Indiana State Fair for the decline of this pull. Jo Jo Duvall
